Why I've Joined Passports with Purpose to Support Heifer International

During the month of December, I am joining a number of travel bloggers in supporting Heifer International, what I believe to be one of the most effective and important charitable organizations in the world.

Heifer does not simply help feed families in need, its programs help families around the world and in more than half of the states in the U.S.A. to become self-reliant for the long haul.

With livestock resources and training to support oneself and one's family, parents and children benefit from better nutrition, stability, and often the ability to enjoy other opportunities--such as school--that may have otherwise remained out of reach for many. To me, that is the best gift you can give a family in need, and exactly the kind of change we should all wish to see in the world, including ours here at home.

Better still, families benefiting from Heifer’s programs agree to share offspring of their “gift animals” and their training with other families in need, making them equal partners in Heifer’s fight to end world hunger. It really makes you think when you realize that a $20 donation alone—the cost of two of these raffle tickets—can buy an entire flock of chickens, or ducks, or geese for a family, and will give them a solid source of protein plus added income from selling extra eggs. But the $20 donation doesn’t even end there, because as that flock multiplies, it will create even more flocks for more families in need.
